My wife and I switched to the Soodsma Agency and Erie Insurance shortly after moving to Green Bay from the Madison area. We have been satisfied with the price of our auto, condo, and umbrella policy, and our agent, Kristin Gallagher, has been responsive to our requests for policy updates and quotes on potential new policies for houses we have looked at buying.
That said, being insured with Erie has not been overwhelmingly positive. While we haven't had any claims to complain about, Erie did have a computer outage last year that made their on-line resources unavailable. And last fall, they were down-graded by insurance rating agency AM Best from an A+ rating (2nd highest) to A (third highest). So that is a trend we are watching. But these are minor considerations compared to our experience with our prior insurer, who:
1) Withdrew from the Wisconsin market.
2) Transferred our policies to an affiliated company;
3) In doing so, transferred our policies to a different agent; and
4) Did not respond to any inquiries about the need for these changes at the corporate or agency level.
As a retired actuary, I have seen the property/casualty insurance industry transform from being honestly concerned about service and fair claim settlement (mostly, anyway) to instead treating the product as a commodity for which the most important thing is slick advertising (Flo from Progressive, the GEICO gecko, Allstate's mayhem guy, Jake from State Farm, et al). Service and product quality are secondary now. This makes it a crapshoot to find a company and agency you can truly depend on. Erie and Soodsma are ones you can.
